Quiet Places | Alejandra Bernal | 2023
Group Exhibition hosted by Lamma Art Collective | Hong Kong
It is somewhere between 3:00 and 6:00 am. The unguarded stillness of the city belies the movement it has seen. There is a quiet anticipation in the air. I set my exposure on the camera and so, a slow ritual begins. It is a moment of intimacy, a slowing down, a symbiosis with the city. A susurrus of light, color, and shadow takes form as my subconscious is made real in this exchange in front of me. It is through this waiting, the passing of each second stretched infinitely through the open shutter that I am able to see each line and hue of the shapes before me recede and be reborn anew. With each passing second, the city and I are intertwined in the shared vulnerability of the moments captured in each piece.
This series was shot with a medium format film camera, every photograph is a long exposure ranging from 45 seconds to 5 minutes.
